Casa dei Bambini Montessori Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten's Sensorial Area contain materials used to increase childrens awareness of the senses they use in the environment around them.
Children learn not by being told how something works but by experiencing it first hand.
The first is the sense of sight. These materials help the preschool child to discern objects by classification with varying degrees of dimension, color, and shape. Dr. Montessori felt manipulation of such objects helped the child to better understand his or her environment.
The next is sense of touch. The touch boards and fabric samples help preschool children discern their tactile sense.
Third, the child gets to use the baric tablets, which help to discern weight.
Next, the child may use the sound boxes to develop their auditory sense.
Finally, the preschool child uses geometric solids, sorting trays, and sandpaper globes to sharpen their stereognostic sense, the ability to judge size and shape through the sense of touch.
All sensorial materials help to organize the preschool and kindergarden child’s intelligence.
