Beginning Preschool Math

Casa dei Bambini Montessori gives Preschool & Pre- Kindergarten children the opportunity to learn basic numerals through multiplication and long division.

Math Materials are first introduced as fixed quantities and then loose quantities.  These are then matched with numerals.

Math materials are attractive to small preschool hands and are easily utilized.

Every math work is present in the class each day giving children the opportunity to develop basic and abstract math concepts at their own pace.

The above photo shows the Beads and Numeral Hanging work.

With this material children make one to one correspondence with fixed quantities. This material is beloved among the children of the classroom for its feel and wonderful colors.

The youngest preschool child can do this work and develop their fine motor skills, while the older child works out fundamental mathematical principles.

Beginning Preschool Reading

During Casa dei Bambini Montessori's circle time Preschool & Pre- Kindergarten children are exposed to remarkable literature and receive great books to read.

Children are first introduced to Insets to practice drawing.   These figures of geometry mimic the design shapes, lines, and angles in every letter of the alphabet.  By tracing children train their minds and hands to form letters and correctly hold a pencil.

Preschoolers touch sandpaper letters while saying the phonetic sound of each letter.  With the moveable alphabet children learn how to blend sounds and correctly sound out words.

Preschool children are very interested in small objects.  These small phonetic objects are used in exercises to build words with a "moveable alphabet."  Children then match words and objects.  The cycle repeats itself with longer phonetic words developing confidence and vocabulary.

Later, preschool children are exposed to basic grammar rules through use of materials that include a farm set, and other various games.

Preschool - Practical Life

Practical Life activities at Casa dei Bambini Montessori in Santa Maria enable Preschool and Pre-Kindergarten children to classify their environment and understand how things work.

These activities include pouring, transferring, sweeping, cleaning, polishing, and the use of dressing frames. All of the activities involve care of self and care of the environment.

Practical Life work builds self esteem giving preschool students a sense of value in their work.  These works are in preparation for there adult life.  By doing her work well she will retain her self-esteem and be happy as an adult.

As an adult person they will choose work they are good at and enjoy.

Preschool children thrive in orderly environments.  Each practical life activity has a useful purpose applicable to daily life.

The practical life area of the classroom leads to realistic life development of skills.

The preschool child that uses these materials learns independence as well as personal and social responsibility.

Preschool - Sensorial

Casa dei Bambini Montessori Preschool & Pre-Kindergarten's Sensorial Area contain materials used to increase childrens awareness of the senses they use in the environment around them.

Children learn not by being told how something works but by experiencing it first hand.

The first is the sense of sight. These materials help the preschool child to discern objects by classification with varying degrees of dimension, color, and shape.  Dr. Montessori felt manipulation of such objects helped the child to better understand his or her environment.

The next is sense of touch.  The touch boards and fabric samples help preschool children discern their tactile sense.

Third, the child gets to use the baric tablets, which help to discern weight.

Next, the child may use the sound boxes to develop their auditory sense.

Finally, the preschool child uses geometric solids, sorting trays, and sandpaper globes to sharpen their stereognostic sense, the ability to judge size and shape through the sense of touch.

All sensorial materials help to organize the preschool and kindergarden child’s intelligence.
